Y13 Baseline assessment: Learner response

 Baseline assessment learner response

Create a new blog post called 'Y13 baseline assessment learner response' and complete the following tasks:

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
Nasra - a great assessment overall - lots of specific examples and overall strong knowledge for Q3 on magazine CSPs and audiences
For Q1 - give examples of BBC mission statement in relation to BBC newsbeat
For Q3 - consider more on industries for top marks

2) Focusing on the BBC Newsbeat question, write three ways it helps to fulfil the BBC's mission statement that you didn't include in your original assessment answer. Use the mark scheme for ideas.
  • 15-29 target audience
  • selection of news to educate younger audience
  • Construction of bulletins, music and sports

3) Question two asked you how useful media effects theories are in understanding the audience response to War of the Worlds. Complete the following:
  • Gerbner's Cultivation theory: useful or not useful? Why?
useful- suggests that high frequent viewers are more susceptible and the people that had been listening for the past few days were used to the news interruptions so were therefore, more vulnerable.
  • Frankfurt School's Hypodermic Needle model: useful or not useful? Why?
useful- tells us that the listeners were passive and did not question the news they received
  • Stuart Hall's Reception theory: useful or not useful? Why?
useful-  tells us the variations of consumer reactions, dominant, negotiated, oppositional

4) Write a full essay plan for the 25-mark Magazines question. The mark scheme contains plenty of ideas you can use here. Your plan should include notes/bullet points addressing the following:
  • Introduction: one sentence answering the original question and laying out your argument clearly.
The large impact digital media has had on traditional media is evident on both the magazines' engagement, however both GQ and the gentlewomen have successfully attracted their target audience.
  • Paragraph 1 content/ideas: GQ - demographics and digital content that appeals to them
  • Paragraph 2 content/ideas: GQ psychographics and examples of diversification
  • Paragraph 3 content/ideas: The gentlewomen - demographics
  • Paragraph 4 content/ideas: The Gentlewomen- psychographics
  • Conclusion: sum up your argument a final time in one sentence- In conclusion GQ and The Gentlewomen have successfully targeted their audiences despite the negative impacts digital media has had on traditional print. Digital media has offered magazines a way to bring readers together to generate positive word of mouth and discuss their shared interests
5) Finally, identify three key skills/topics you want to work on in A Level Media this year before the final exams in the summer.
  • Carefully panning arguments and paragraphs beforehand
  • evaluating- exploring both sides to arguments
  • apply more theories in questions to validate arguments
